It depends on where the nest is and how hard it is to reach safely. A paper wasp nest under an eave at ground level is a quick job. A European wasp nest inside a wall cavity, under a concrete slab or three storeys up takes longer and needs more gear. The number of nests matters too, and so does whether we can treat on the first visit or have to return at dusk. No. This is the single worst thing you can do, and it is the mistake we get called out to most. A sealed colony does not die - it chews a new way out, and the softest material is almost always the internal plaster lining rather than the external wall. People who block an entry hole in the evening can wake up to wasps coming through the ceiling into a bedroom. Leave the entrance completely alone and let the nest be treated through it. Sealing comes after the colony is dead, not before.

No. Agriculture Victoria records that the European wasp has become so widespread in Victoria that it is now considered naturalised and is no longer a notifiable pest. That means there is no legal obligation to report or remove one, and you should be wary of anyone telling you otherwise to push a booking. The reason to remove a nest is practical, not legal - European wasps sting repeatedly and defend the nest as a group, so a nest near a doorway or an outdoor area is a genuine hazard.

Queens emerge in spring, and nests build through summer to their largest and most aggressive around January to April. That is when most of our calls come in. Winter is not automatically safe, though - Agriculture Victoria notes that mild southern winters let some nests survive the season, and an overwintering nest starts the next year with a head start instead of from scratch, so it can grow very large. If you saw wasps last autumn in the same spot, have it checked rather than assuming winter killed it.

Yes, and we remove them alive. Bees are a completely different job to wasps: no pesticides are used on them at all. A swarm hanging in the open is collected and rehomed, and an established colony inside a wall, roof or chimney is opened up so the bees, the comb and the honey all come out, then the cavity is sealed so the next swarm does not move into the same spot. We treat at the nest entrance, usually at dusk, using products registered for wasp control and applied strictly to their label directions. Dusk matters because the foraging workers are back inside, so the whole colony is present rather than half of it out in your garden. Returning wasps carry the product deeper into the nest, which is what kills the colony rather than only the wasps you can see at the entrance. Where the nest is accessible we then remove it; where it sits deep inside a sealed cavity we will explain honestly whether opening the wall is worth it.

European wasps are bright yellow and black, thicker-bodied, and they fly with their legs tucked in. Their nests are hidden - inside a wall or roof cavity, under decking, or in the ground - so usually all you see is a steady stream of wasps going in and out of one small point. Paper wasps are slimmer and more orange-brown, they fly with their legs dangling, and they build the open grey umbrella-shaped comb you can see under an eave or pergola. European wasps are the more aggressive of the two and the more urgent job, which is why we identify the species before quoting.

On a small, visible paper wasp nest you can reach from the ground, sometimes. On a European wasp nest, no. A can of spray reaches the wasps at the entrance, not the colony inside the cavity, so the nest survives and becomes far more defensive afterwards - which makes the professional job harder and the situation more dangerous in the meantime. Ladder work beside an active nest is also how people get seriously hurt, from the fall rather than the stings.

We use products registered for wasp control and apply them to label, which is the condition our licence is granted on. The product goes into the nest entrance rather than being sprayed across open areas, so exposure is very limited. We will give you a clear re-entry time before we start and we will ask about children, pets, fish ponds, chickens and vegetable gardens during the inspection so the plan suits your property. What we will not do is tell you a pesticide is “100% safe” - no honest operator can promise that, and you should be cautious of any who does.

A treated colony does not recover once the queen and brood are dead. What can happen is a new queen starting a fresh nest nearby in a later season, particularly if the gap that attracted the first one is still open - which is why we point out the eave gaps, weep holes, cracked mortar and vents before we leave.
